September 11, 2020 | Pathologist Focused Patient Provider Workshop: Communication Skills for Becoming a More Efficient and Effective Clinician and Colleague | Session 1

September 11, 2020

Pathologists must communicate efficiently and effectively with their colleague physicians in the medical center and within their own department. While much of this communication is straightforward, there are many opportunities for disagreement and interpersonal strains to interfere. The result is inefficiency in problem solving as well as damaged relationships and diminished collegiality and civility in the workplace.

There is a need to efficiently workout differences among colleagues and effectively solve problems, while preserving and even improving relationships. This workshop will describe and demonstrate a practical model of negotiation and apply the model to a range of typical and difficult situations that might occur. The main objective is for participants to learn a perspective and a skill that is immediately applicable.

Target Audience

Pathologists and other allied healthcare providers who help determine patient care.

Learning Objectives

  • Develop an attitude that makes interacting more civil, efficient and fluid.
  • Outline specific skills to quickly analyzing situations and learn to choose the most effective perspective and behavior.
  • Identify how the group could function more collegially with its members and medical center colleagues if there was a shared understanding of the best way to surface and resolve disagreements of all kinds.
  • Demonstrate how effective communication and analyzation skills  can be helpful in all situations at work, home and in the community.
  • Outline the various types of cultural diversities (gender, age, race, religion, culture, etc.) that relate to demographics, diagnosis and treatment.
