2020 Pediatric Grand Rounds | Meeting the Oncofertility Needs of Children and Adolescents with Cancer

Duarte, CA US
March 5, 2020

Multi-level barriers to reproductive health care exist for young people with cancer. A significant barrier is knowledge gaps in healthcare providers and patients about risks and management options. Others include lack of referral sites as well as financial barriers to care. There is currently a lack of evidence-based strategies on how to implement reproductive health care routinely for young cancer survivors.

Reproductive risk discussions throughout the cancer care continuum is an evidence-based practice. This is because medically effective screening and treatments exist to prevent infertility (via ovarian reserve tests and fertility preservation) and unintended pregnancy (via effective and acceptable contraceptive methods). In addition, young cancer survivors have unmet informational needs regarding reproductive risks that frequently result in distress, depression, and poorer quality of life. Currently, uptake of reproductive risk discussions is commonly low.

Target Audience

Pediatric hematology/oncology physicians, advance practice practitioners, staff and research team.

Learning Objectives

  • Examine the need to address infertility risks and screening for reproductive health needs with children and adolescents with cancer and their families.
  • Outline examples of fertility preservation methods.
  • Identify tools to estimate post-treatment gonadal function.
