2020 Department of Supportive Care Medicine Grand Rounds | Integrating Geriatrics with Supportive Care

Duarte, CA US
March 2, 2020

There is rapidly evolving new information regarding elderly people, however, it can be challenging to conduct research in this patient population. Due to these challenges, there is a need to integrate geriatrics into supportive care. Cancer is typically a disease that affects this age group. It is important to understand the unique needs of elderly patients, the impact of age and co-morbid illness on disease presentation, treatment selection, tolerance, prognosis, etc. There is still a paucity of research data when it comes to cancer treatment in elderly patients. Providing an update on supportive care needs in older adults with cancer can enhance our knowledge and improve our practice; as an example, making more informed decisions about patient's treatment options, as well as supporting the patient throughout their treatment and survivorship trajectory. Ideal practice would involve routine use of tools, such as comprehensive geriatric assessment, to screen and address individual patient's needs.
